City of Wilmington Candidates Respond to Environmental Questionnaire

The following candidates chose not to respond to the questionnaire:

Bill Saffo; Mayor

Skip Watkins; Council Member

Felix Cooper; Council Member

Kevin O’Grady; Council Member

Charlie Rivenbark; Council Member

Derek Bickel; Council Member

These questions (aside from storm water management considerations within city limits) are outside of the jurisdiction of Wilmington City Council; therefore, I do not have any stance on these as a city council candidate.

1. Do you support or oppose Titan America’s plan to open a cement plant on the NE Cape Fear River?

Earl Sheridan; Council Member

I think manufacturing is okay, but I am concerned about the level of pollutants associated with this plant.
2. Do you support or oppose the opening of the Mid-Atlantic Ocean region to seismic air-gun testing for the exploration of off-shore oil & gas?

Earl Sheridan; Council Member

Oppose
2.A. Do you support or oppose offshore oil & gas production off the coast of NC?

Earl Sheridan; Council Member

Oppose
3. Do you support or oppose lifting the moratorium on Hydraulic Fracking in NC?

Earl Sheridan; Council Member

Oppose

4. As an elected leader, what are some of your ideas for improving stormwater management?

Earl Sheridan; Council Member

The city has spent 35 million dollars on stormwater improvements in the past few years, with plans to spend more.  We have also engaged in an aggressive education program educating the public about the problem of stormwater runoff.  We have undertaken efforts to curb pet waste and we have scrutinized new development .  I think we should continue along this vein especially in education.
5. Do you support or oppose efforts to reduce single-use plastics? As an elected official what steps would you support or oppose, a check out register Plastic Bag Ban, Fee, or Bag Return Incentive?

Earl Sheridan; Council Member

I would support efforts to reduce single-use plastics and emphasize education and would need to study the pros and cons of these other methods.
6. Do you support or oppose policy to allow the use of more Hardened Structures (terminal groins, jetties, seawalls, etc) to stabilize beach erosion and inlet stabilization?

Earl Sheridan; Council Member

I oppose it.

7. Do you support or oppose the regulation of smoking on publicly held land including parks and beaches?

Earl Sheridan; Council Member

I support it.
